The FOI Act governs access to official documents in Victoria. The FOI Act requires proactive publication of certain information and documents by agencies, and establishes a regime under which any person may request access to any document held by an agency or any official document held by a Minister.

The Freedom of Information Amendment (Freedom of information Commissioner) Act 2012 (External link) introduced important reforms to Victoria’s FOI regime by establishing the Information Commissioner. Part IA of the FOI Act sets out the Information Commissioner’s functions, including those of the Public Access Deputy Commissioner.
