The Information Commissioner is an independent officer of the Parliament of Victoria, appointed by the Governor in Council, who reports directly to Parliament through a joint parliamentary committee, the Accountability and Oversight Committee.

The Information Commissioner plays an important role in promoting the operation of the FOI Act by reviewing agency FOI decisions, handling FOI complaints about agencies, monitoring compliance with the Act and providing advice, education and guidance to the public and agencies in relation to the Commissioner’s functions and any professional standards set by the Minister.
